Chapter Eighteen

LILY

Lily sat in the small room, getting more and more annoyed. Kanar had been gone for most of the night, and she had no idea how long she would have to wait before he returned. She had no idea what would happen to Jal and Honaaz now that they been caught.

They’d be put in prison, no doubt. Maybe that was their plan all along, but if so, it would’ve been nice of them to give her a heads-up. Jal’s whistling had helped, but not nearly enough for her to make any sort of preparation.

They had to plan for all of this, and now there was no way they were going to be able to come up with one.

Where was Kanar?

He could be so frustrating, especially with this. He had not shared much with them about his plan, though increasingly, she started to wonder if he really had much of one. Come to Verendal, break the person out of prison, and then what? Lily wasn’t even sure if he had a clue after that.

It was getting late. Or early, as the case may be. Soon the sun would come up, and then they would have to deal with the consequences of Jal and Honaaz’s capture.

There would be questions, for Jal in particular. He was obviously not from Reyand. Honaaz didn’t look it either, but at least there were large men like him everywhere.

She didn’t know how long Honaaz would hold out if he were questioned. Jal wouldn’t say anything. At least, she didn’t think he would.

If they waited a day, they might have time to regroup, but there might also be time for something worse to happen.

Everything was going to fall apart.

One thousand gold. Lily had been telling herself that ever since leaving Sanaron, but the thousand gold wasn’t really worth it.

She wanted to get away, sail across the sea, leave the city behind her, and find a new place for her to explore, maybe settle down. Find some pretty merchant, have a few babies, and forget about everything she’d been through.

But she couldn’t leave Jal behind. Or even Honaaz.

Finally, the door opened, and a hooded figure came in. Rather, was pushed in. Kanar came behind, holding a dagger to the man’s throat.

Lily jumped to her feet. “What is this?”

Kanar closed the door and shoved the man onto one of the beds. He was taller than her, though most people were, and there was a certain muscularity to him.

Had Kanar grabbed a soldier?

Maybe he had learned about what happened to Jal and Honaaz and this was his way of dealing with it.

“This is the Hunter,” Kanar said.

She frowned. “Hunter?”

Kanar nodded, and he flicked his gaze around the room. “Where are the other two?”

“The city watch hauled them off. I followed them to that same prison we were—”

Kanar raised his hand, cutting her off, and she glanced over to the hooded man. This time, she really looked at him.

His clothing was high quality. The pants looked to be almost silken, and his jacket had a layer of embroidery around it, along with a crest for the king on the lapel.
